Christine Hohmann :: Call booth Talking
Zellengespräche von Mi-Fr
(2000)
The idea for this project occurred to me as I realized how little contact there is between people in many densely populated areas. The need for contact is still there but the occasions for making this contact are becoming less and less. Sometimes this is because people just don´t take the time and sometimes it is because they don´t want to leave the cover of anonymity. But the wish to communicate still exists.
As I realized all of this I decided to find a neutral place where people could communicate. A place which was based on communication. A place where people had the chance to talk to one another. Somewhere that was easy to reach and in full sight. The place that ticked all the boxes was a telephone booth situated near bus stop and a small park. Telephone booths are built for communication but would this encourage people to linger voluntarily without only using the telephone?
To encourage this I had to come up with something that people could comment on, something that people could offer an opinion on. I had to draw attention to the telephone booth using something visual that would make people curious, something unusual that is not normally associated with a telephone booth.
I decided on unusual decoration : pictures. a bunch of flowers and curtains. Things that are not normally found in a telephone booth.
So I started my search for the necessary and after 4 days I was ready.
